New Members Only
In 2022, the Indigenous Bar Association (IBA) passed two significant motions at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) aimed at enhancing the integrity of its membership and appointments. These changes reflect the IBA's commitment to promoting legal opportunities for Indigenous individuals in Canada and ensuring that its members and representatives meet a rigorous standard of Indigenous identity.
The IBA has introduced a new membership application form, which includes enhanced verification measures.
This form now requires applicants to provide a reference to verify their Indigenous community or nation, allows for the submission of additional information in cases of unique circumstances (e.g., impacts of colonialism), and includes a declaration of Indigenous identity with consent for the Board to verify the information provided. This updated process aims to prevent identity fraud and maintain the IBA’s role as a trusted Indigenous professional organization.
*New members are those whom have never held membership with the IBA or those who held an IBA membership prior to May 1, 2024.
New Member Application Form
All persons seeking new membership with the Indigenous Bar Association in Canada (the “IBA”) must complete the new membership form and swear/affirm a Declaration of Applicant as part of their application. In addition, all persons accepted for membership in the IBA must pay the applicable annual registration/membership fees (listed below).
