Honour to announce 2026 Annual Conference
will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia
Located on Mi’kma’ki, the traditional and unceded territory to the Mi’kmaq people.
The Mi’kmaq have called this region home for thousands of years. Halifax is on land governed by the historic Peace and Friendship Treaties, first concluded with the British Crown in the 18th century, which continue to affirm relationships to this day.
About the Indigenous land where Halifax is located:
Kjipuktuk: The Mi’kmaw name for Halifax is Kjipuktuk, meaning “Great Harbour”.
Unceded Territory: This land was never surrendered, ceded, or purchased by treaty, and remains under the stewardship of the Mi’kmaq.
Treaty People: The treaties, signed beginning in 1725, did not transfer land ownership but established a foundation for peace, friendship, and shared use of the land—making all who live here “Treaty People”.
Mi’kmaw Territory: Mi’kma’ki encompasses all of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and parts of New Brunswick, Newfoundland, and Quebec.
