TRC Curriculum Implementation Initiatives

The Peter A. Allard School of Law, University of British Columbia (“Allard Law”) is seeking a full time Research Associate (“TRC Research Associate”) to work with the faculty on supporting curriculum initiatives related to addressing the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Call to Action No. 28.

THE POSITION

The position will run from Sept 15, 2019 (or other negotiated starting date), for 12 months. The TRC Research Associate will report to the Dean, and will be responsible for providing strategic support for a comprehensive process of review and curriculum development that seeks to integrate the topics in Call to Action No. 28 across the law school’s JD curriculum. Particular duties may include:

  • completing a comprehensive audit of the Allard Law School curriculum and identifying opportunities to address TRC topics more broadly;
  • researching and summarizing curricular approaches that are being developed to the TRC elsewhere in Canada and in other disciplines and settings, and assessing their viability at Allard Law;
  • researching and summarizing pedagogical and cultural best practices for integrating Indigenous content in curriculum;
  • developing classroom resources and toolkits that instructors at Allard Law can draw on in their classroom teaching to address TRC topics; and
  • planning, coordinating and facilitating faculty workshops and sessions on topics relevant to the project.

QUALIFICATIONS

JD, LLB or equivalent law degree (minimum), PhD or other graduate degree preferred.

experience working in legal education and/or the legal profession in Canada (preferably both)

familiarity with the work of the Truth and Reconciliation and the TRC Calls to Action, and preferably experience working in the areas identified by TRC Call to Action No. 28

excellent written and oral communication skills

experience working with Indigenous communities is highly desirable

The incumbent must be able to work closely with faculty and faculty committees and across various stakeholders at the University. The incumbent must have the ability to establish trust and strong collaborative working relationships to ensure success of initiatives. The salary range for this position is $80-90K, and offers will be based on the qualifications and experience of the successful candidate.
